Reblogging makes provenance genuinely hard

Tumblr's defining mechanic is the reblog, which copies a post into another blog while preserving a chain back to the source. A single image may exist on thousands of blogs, and the post you are looking at might be fifteen reblogs from its origin. The media itself usually still resolves from Tumblr's own content-delivery network, but working out who actually made it can be genuinely difficult — and on a platform full of artists, that matters more than usual.

Posts are typed, and each type stores differently

Tumblr has distinct post types — photo, photoset, video, audio, text, quote, link — and they are stored differently. A photoset is a collection of separate images rather than one file, much like an Instagram carousel, and a text post can have images embedded in its body that are not "photo post" objects at all. Which type you are dealing with determines what comes back.

GIFs are actually GIFs here

Unlike X or Pinterest, which convert uploads to video, Tumblr genuinely stores GIFs as GIFs. The platform's culture was built on them — reaction sets, gifsets from film and television, hand-made animations. That means the file you get is a real animated GIF, often large, since the format is far less efficient than video.

Resolution depends on upload era

Tumblr has existed since 2007 and its image size limits have changed repeatedly. Older posts may top out at 500 pixels wide because that was the maximum when they were published; newer ones go much larger. An old post returning a small image is not a failure — that is the file, at the size the platform accepted at the time.

Mature content and blog-level settings

Blogs can be flagged, hidden from search, or set to require a logged-in session. Deactivated blogs take their media with them, which is why so many old reblog chains resolve to broken images.

Artists live here

Tumblr has an unusually strong norm around crediting and not re-posting art without permission, precisely because the reblog mechanic makes attribution fragile. Reblog rather than re-upload; if you save something, keep the source with it.
