Reddit Downloader — Videos with Audio & Images

The split-audio problem, explained

Reddit is the platform where naive downloading fails most spectacularly, and the reason is technical. When a video is uploaded to v.redd.it, Reddit does not store it as one self-contained file. It uses DASH streaming, which keeps the video track and the audio track as entirely separate streams sitting at different addresses. If you simply right-click and save the video you see playing, you get the picture with total silence, because you only grabbed the video stream. The sound was never in that file. This is the single most common complaint about saved Reddit clips, and it is not a corrupted download, it is the format working exactly as designed.

How merging fixes it

The correct approach is to fetch both streams and mux them back together into one file. A proper Reddit downloader pulls the video segment and the matching audio segment, then remuxes them so the finished MP4 plays with sound. Because the two are stored independently, quality is chosen per stream, which is why you can sometimes get a high-resolution picture paired with clean audio in a single merged result. If a clip you saved elsewhere is silent, the fix is almost always re-fetching it through a tool that performs this merge rather than assuming the original had no sound.

Galleries, crossposts, and the domains

Not everything on Reddit is a v.redd.it video. Image galleries bundle several stills into one post, each available at full resolution. Crossposts are pointers, a post in one subreddit referencing the original in another, so the real media lives at the source post rather than the crosspost wrapper. You will also notice two front-ends: old.reddit.com and the newer default interface. They present the same content differently, and the old layout sometimes exposes a more direct path to the underlying media, which is handy when the modern viewer is being stubborn.

Restricted subreddits

Content in NSFW or quarantined communities is gated behind age confirmation and, in some cases, explicit opt-in. Reddit will not serve that media to an anonymous request, and neither will any public tool. If a subreddit requires you to be logged in and to have confirmed you want to see its content, that gate applies to downloaders too.

Download considerately

Reddit thrives on shared, often original content, and the same fairness rules apply. Save a public clip to watch offline, archive a post you contributed to, or keep a reference for later, and that is fine. Re-uploading someone's original video without credit, or lifting gallery images into a commercial product, is not. Stick to public communities, respect the age gates that exist for a reason, and honour Reddit's content policy and the creators behind the posts.
